Best Tailgate TV Mounts

When we first began tailgating with a TV, we realized that the mounting options were plentiful. With so many options out there the key to finding the best tailgate TV mount depends entirely on your setup. Budgets, surfaces, and the the size of your area all play a huge role in determining your best mount options. Below we have discussed the best tailgate TV mounts and what you may need to look for to find the best options for your tailgate party setup.

Tailgate TV Tripod Stand Mount

A great budget friendly option for flat tailgating surfaces such as concrete or asphalt is a tripod style, portable TV mount. These are often the most inexpensive tailgate TV mount options. Some things to keep in mind, you may need a larger tailgate space in order to use this option. These stands will use some real estate at your tailgate party and you especially want to keep them in position to stay out of foot traffic to make sure an unfortunate accident will not occur.

Tailgate TV Hitch Mount

Our absolute favorite style of tailgate TV mount is the hitch mount. Not only does it save a huge amount of space in our tailgate area, it is easy to transport as it folds flat. It is also minimizes any accidents of having the TV knocked over being at the tailgate party mounted into the tailgate hitch. There is also the added benefit of being able to be swiveled to point away from the sun or for smaller tailgate spaces. This is one item in our collection that has been worth every penny.

Tailgate TV Hitch Mount for Smaller TVs

Another option for a tailgating TV hitch mount is the TV Stud. This hitch mount works better for smaller TVs and works great for SUVs as it only holds up to 50″ TVs. This is another helpful space saving option as well as more budget friendly than the larger TV mounts.

You can always set up tabletop

Before we jumped into mounts, we had our TV on a 6ft table. This absolutely works and is likely the most often used setup for most tailgates. We learned a few tips along the way on this as well. Table placement is key to minimize any accidents, so we placed our table as close to the back of the truck as possible. Next, take a look at your surface and make sure that it is even. Any slight bump to a table on an uneven surface can cause your TV to fall and no one wants that at a tailgate. You can also invest in a new stand that may allow your TV to be more secure.

Throughout the years, we have tried many different TVs for our Tailgating TV setup. We have had different brands and different sizes. Best Size Tailgate TV

The tailgate TV size that we have found to work best for our space is a 50 inch TV. Imagine your tailgate setup and what tables or mounts that you will be using. This size easily fits into the backseat of our truck and is relatively easy for one person to manage in setup. We currently use a hitch mount but it also fits well on a 6ft table with space for a few other items. Larger TVs can be more difficult to travel whereas smaller TVs can make it difficult for larger crowds to see.

Best Tailgate TV Brands

The tailgate TV that we found to be the best option overall, is our Samsung and this being primarily due to the sound quality. When looking for a brand for your tailgating TV, keep in mind that value is often key. There are a lot of opportunities for a TV to get destroyed in the process from transporting, during a tailgate party, and the return trip home.

One of our most popular tailgates of last football season was our Shrimp Boil. We love finding tailgating food that will feed a crowd and this recipe was incredibly easy. It also requires minimum equipment so it is super easy to assemble, cook, and pack back up.

We bought our Loco Cooker setup originally for our annual Derby party. I realized at that time that it would be super easy to set up at our tailgate. You then just need your propane tank and a pair of heat resistant gloves. We have a few pairs that we use but prefer long ones in case of any splash up.

Easy Set Tailgating Setup with our Loco Cooker

A few tips for perfecting your low country or shrimp boil for tailgating:

  • You can fill up your pot for transport ahead of time so long as you can keep it from moving. Otherwise, you may want to grab multiple gallons of water to fill at your tailgate.
  • Minimize your prep time at the tailgate by cutting your corn and peeling and deveining your shrimp ahead of time.
  • Newspaper is most often used but you can also use parchment paper as a substitute.
  • Keep an eye on the shrimp, it will cook incredibly fast!

How to Watch TV at Tailgating

How to Watch TV at Tailgating

How to Watch TV at the Tailgate

Nothing quite adds to the social hour like setting up a tailgate TV to watch other games before game time. We get a lot more traffic to our tailgate spot when we have the TV hooked up. Luckily, you only need three things to watch TV at tailgating. We have added a bonus 4th item for mounting your TV with ease!

  1. Television: This is the obvious must-have for watching TV at tailgating. One tip for deciding on your TV for tailgating is how easily you can transport it from home to the game. We know that we if we get a TV too large it will not fit in our backseat. Another tip, we don’t recommend buying a high end television. Accidents can happen. Don’t buy a TV that would make you cry if it gets damaged. No one likes to be sad before the game even starts. Click here to see our 2020 List of Tailgate TVs.
  2. Power Source: If you are not tailgating nearby an outlet, invest in a small generator. The power source we use for our tailgate is the Honda EU1000i Inverter Generator. This generator is popular because it is easy to transport and extremely quiet. While there are many sizes to choose from, this size can easily run a TV and satellite dish.
  3. A Satellite Dish or Antenna: If you have DISH or DirectTV as your regular service provider, adding a dish to your account is easy and often extremely inexpensive. For us, adding to our DISH account is $7 per month. The KING Tailgater Bundle includes Portable Satellite TV Antenna and DISH Wally HD Receiver has all you need to start tailgating with Dish Network at your tailgate. “Bunny Ears” have come a long way and another option to watch TV at your tailgate is a TV Antenna. This will give you local channels but we also recommend checking out the FCC DTV Reception Maps to check regional availability ahead of time.
  4. A Tailgate TV Mount: While it isn’t necessary we will file this under a bonus item. One of the items we love is our Tailgate TV Mount. This freed up our table space allows us to make much more efficient uses of our space. We opted to choose a mount that allows for us to open and close the tailgate of our truck.

Cajun Ranch Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos

One of our most often requested tailgating recipes are our Cajun Ranch Bacon-Wrapped Jalapenos. Cheesy, savory, and spicy are all rolled into one with this crowd pleasing tailgate food idea!

A few tips before we jump into the recipe.

  • I promise that you will appreciate using food safe gloves here. All it takes is one rub of the eye after washing your hands to realize that you didn’t get all of the jalapeno juice off.
  • There is nothing more satisfying than a solid knife. If you’re looking for knives that cut like butter and are made to last, check out Wusthof knives. We used a Wusthof Paring Knife in this recipe.
  • This is an easy tailgating recipe as you don’t have to be as precise with your measurements. If you love super spicy, just add more cajun!
  • Use your left over mixture as a dip. Sometimes there will be more cheese mixture than peppers. It serves great on crackers!

Cajun Ranch Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers

Spice up the tailgate food with this Tailgate Winners recipe! One of our most requested, tried and true tailgating recipes are our Cajun Ranch Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers. Starting with a basic jalapeno popper recipe we continued to add until we reached this delightful and savory combo of cajun and ranch. These super cheesy peppers will be a fan favorite at your tailgate or as an appetizer at any event!
Prep Time 30 minutes
Course Appetizer
Cuisine American
Servings 12 people

Equipment

  • Oven, Grill, or Smoker

Ingredients

  • 10 Jalapenos Makes 20 Poppers
  • 1 Package Bacon
  • 1 Package Cream Cheese – Softened Full fat or 1/3 fat
  • 1/2 Packet of Ranch Seasoning Such as Hidden Valley
  • 2 Tbls Cajun/Creole Seasoning of Choice Such as Tony Chachere's
  • 1 Cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Instructions

  • Combine Softened Cream Cheese with Ranch seasoning, cajun seasoning, and one cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Blend well into a mixing bowl. Set to the side and let the flavors blend. Preheat your Oven, Grill, or Smoker
  • Using food safe gloves, cut the jalapenos in half long-ways. Using a knife or another tool, get out all the seeds so you are left with a jalapeno “boat”. Be super careful not to get the juices in your eyes. I promise you will be sad.
  • Use a spoon to spread the mixture inside the jalapeno halves and wrap each jalapeno half with one solid layer or bacon. You may need to cut your bacon in half depending on the size of your peppers.
  • Cooking –
  • Oven: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet aluminum foil to keep it neat and tidy. Once the bacon is cooked through and crispy, your jalapenos are finished! Start watching closely around the 20-30 minute mark for the bacon to cook. Bacon goes from perfection to burnt in a split second in the oven make sure to keep a close eye on them using this method.
  • Grill: We don’t recommend placing directly on the grill. Use a roasting pan and cover with foil. This method takes a while so you will need to be patient and mindful if you will be grilling other items for your tailgate. Start monitoring after around 20-30 minutes for bacon to crisp and complete cooking.
  • Smoker: Again, use a roasting pan heat uncovered. With a temperature controlled smoker, you will cook 30 minutes around 180 degrees, 30 minutes around 375. Work up to a high temperature at the end to get the bacon crispy! A traditional smoker will yield similarly to the grill.

5 Simple Tailgate Must-Haves

simple tailgate must-haves

Over the years, we have accumulated a large amount of tailgating items. When we first started to travel to games we started small and over time added as we grew with new ideas. Below is our list of our favorite 5 Simple Tailgate Must-Haves!

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission if you click a link and purchase something that we have recommended. Our opinions are 100% our own and we only recommend products and items that we love and use. While clicking these links won’t cost you any extra money, they will help us keep this site up and running!

  1. Take a Seat!
While I tend to stay mobile and social throughout a tailgating event, one of the easiest items to pack is a chair. This simple tailgating must-have will have your feet thanking you later after many hours of cheering! This Stansport Folding Director’s Chair with Side Table is a hit not only at our tailgate but other events such as family reunions, outdoor concerts, or anywhere that you may need a portable seat. It’s nice to have a small side table to hold your drink, your phone, or even a plate of food. For anyone who has played the balance game with a plate full of food in your lap, it’s a lifesaver!
  2. Add some rockin’ tunes!
One of our favorite items for not only tailgating, but for year round use is our ION Audio Tailgater Portable Bluetooth Speaker. We’ve used this for parties, outside while working in the yard, and more. It’s easy to transport and rolls like luggage with a handle and wheels. Added bonus, you can charge your device at the same time!
  3. Keep Your Drinks Cool!
We have entirely way too many coolers. We only justify this because it seems like we need a compilation depending on what we are doing. Right now, my go-to for a cold canned beverage drinking afternoon is my YETI Hopper. You an pack a ton ice and canned beverages without it being too heavy to lug around. It also fits nicely in the floorboard of the car due to having a more flexible exterior.
  4. A Folding Table
We currently use this Lifetime 6 foot Folding Table. Because it folds in half, it travels easily and doesn’t take up a lot of space in the vehicle. We go back and forth between cloth and plastic tablecloths depending on the theme and what we are serving on it. You can easily put your coolers and other items underneath saving the top for all of your delicious food items. Speaking of other items to store under your table, that leads me to number five, a tailgate box!
  5. Tailgate Box
Right now, we use a large plastic storage box for our items we will need almost regularly for every tailgate. A sampling of our items include:
    Health Basics
    – Sunscreen
    – Bugspray
    – First Aid Kit (I’m fairly certain someone read: me ends up needing something out of it)
    Food Serving Items
    – Paper Towels
    – Paper Plates
    – Napkins
    – Cutlery
    – Serving Baskets
Items to store food after we finish eating
    – Plastic Wrap
    – Plastic Baggies
    – Aluminum Foil
    – Chip Clips
    Cleaning Items
    – Clorox Wipes
    – Hand Sanitizer (Because, port-a-potties)

What are some your simple tailgate must-haves? We would love to hear from you!
